Enns
Enns, Austria
Enns is widely recognized as the oldest city in Austria and stands as one of the country’s most remarkable historic destinations. Situated on the banks of the Enns River, the city traces its origins back to the Roman settlement of Lauriacum, one of the most important military and administrative centers of the Roman Empire north of the Alps. At the center of the old town lies the magnificent Stadtplatz, one of the finest preserved medieval squares in Austria. Surrounded by elegant burgher houses, arcaded facades, and historic buildings, the square reflects the prosperity and significance that Enns enjoyed throughout the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Dominating the square is the impressive City Tower, the unmistakable landmark of Enns. Completed in the 16th century, the approximately 60-meter-high tower was built as a symbol of civic pride and independence. Its distinctive clock faces and elegant silhouette have watched over the city for generations, becoming one of the most recognizable historic monuments in Upper Austria. Together, the Stadtplatz and the City Tower create an authentic journey through more than two millennia of European history, blending Roman heritage, medieval tradition, and Renaissance architecture into a truly unforgettable experience.
