The Schaunberg Castle Ruins are among the most remarkable medieval landmarks in Upper Austria and preserve the legacy of one of the region’s most influential noble families. Perched high above the surrounding forests near Eferding, the fortress once served as the ancestral seat of the powerful Counts of Schaunberg, who played a significant role in the political and economic development of the region during the Middle Ages. Originally constructed in the 12th century, the castle was strategically positioned to oversee important trade routes and the fertile landscapes along the Danube Valley. Over the centuries, the fortress expanded into one of the largest castle complexes in Upper Austria before gradually falling into decline after military conflicts and changing political circumstances. Today, its towering remains, ancient stone walls, and partially preserved structures offer a fascinating glimpse into the grandeur of medieval life. Walking through the ruins, visitors can explore impressive remnants of defensive walls, gateways, and the iconic central tower, all surrounded by peaceful woodland that creates a unique and almost timeless atmosphere.
